Zog Nit Keynmol

by Akloleh

/

about

Inspired by the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, Hirsch Glick wrote these lyrics for the Vilna Partisans while in the Vilna Ghetto. The song asserts that, despite millennia of antisemitic violence, we Jews are still here.

lyrics

Yiddish transliterated:
Zog nit kain mol, az di gaist dem letstn veg,

Khotsh himlen blayene farshteln bloye teg.

Kimen vet nokh indzer oysgebenkte sho,

S'vet a poyk ton indzer trot: mir zenen do!

Fin grinem palmenland biz vaysn land fin shnai,

Mir kimen on mit indzer pan, mit indzer vai,

In vu gefaln s'iz a shprits fun indzer blut,

Shprotsn vet dort indzer gvure, indzer mut!
Indzer mut

Zog nit kain mol, az di gaist dem letstn veg,

Khotsh himlen blayene farshteln bloye teg.

Kimen vet nokh indzer oysgebenkte sho,

S'vet a poyk ton indzer trot: mir zenen do!
Mir zenen do

S'vet di morgnzun bagildn indz dem hant,

In der nekhtn vet farshvindn mit dem fant,

Nor oyb farzamen vet di zun in dem kayor –

Vi a parol zol gain dos lid fin dor tsi dor.
Fin dor tsi dor

Dos lid geshribn iz mit blut, in nit mit blay,

S'iz nit kain lidl fin a foygl oyf der fray,

Dos hot a folk tsvishn falndike vent

Dos lid gezingen mit naganes in di hent.

To zog nit kain mol, az di gaist dem letstn veg,

Khotsh himlen blayene farshteln bloye teg.

Kimen vet nokh indzer oysgebenkte sho –

S'vet a poyk ton indzer trot: mir zenen do!
Mir zenen do

English:
Never say that you're going your last way
Although the skies filled with lead cover blue days
Our promised hour will soon come
Our marching steps ring out: 'We are here!'

From green lands of palm to lands with white snow
We come with our pain and our woes
And from where a spurt of our blood falls
Will sprout our strength and our courage

Today the morning sun will accompany us
And the night will fade away with the enemy
But if the sun waits to rise
Like a password this song will go from generation to generation

This song is written with blood and not with [pencil] lead
It's not a tune sung by birds in the wild
This song was sung by people amidst collapsing walls
Sung with pistols in their hands

So never say that you're going your last way
Although the skies filled with lead cover blue days
Our promised hour will soon come
Our marching steps ring out: 'We are here'!
